The Mission, Vision, & Goals of the Safe Zone Program

Mission

We are committed to creating and maintaining a safe and inclusive campus environment regardless of gender identity, expression or sexual orientation. We aim to increase the campus community’s understanding and awareness of issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, allied, asexual, and intersex (LGBTQQAAI) persons through intentional education and advocacy.

Vision

Our vision is to provide a safe space for all members of the Medical University of South Carolina community in solidarity with LGBTQQAAI communities, free from all forms of discrimination, intimidation, hate crimes, bullying, lateral violence, hostility, and bigotry.

Goals

To promote a welcoming and inclusive campus community, and offer support for the emotional and physical safety of people who are marginalized on the basis of their real or perceived sexual or gender orientation at The Medical University of South Carolina by:

  • Creating a network of allies for people who are marginalized on the basis of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender orientation;
  • Establishing safe spaces for individuals to discuss issues related to homophobia, transphobia, and/or heterosexism;
  • Providing education on campus for everyone in an effort to reduce homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism on campus; and
  • Raising awareness regarding the potential impact of the “isms,” including but not limited to heterosexism, homophobiaism, and transphobiaism.
