Michael Yost MD

Michael Yost, Ph.D. – Executive Director (Interim)

Dr. Yost holds a BSChE from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, an MS degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from The University of South Carolina in Columbia. He has 97 peer reviewed publications in bioengineering and regenerative medicine and has been a principal investigator partner in raising millions in research funding for the State of South Carolina and an additional over $5 million for his own laboratory. Dr. Yost has mentored 62 students consisting of surgery residents, graduate students, and undergraduate research students in bioengineering. He is the former chairperson of the Medical University of South Carolina Foundation for Research Development Board of Directors., a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. Dr. Yost has created three startup companies to commercialize technology patented by his laboratory.

Troy Huth

Troy Huth, JD, Ph.D. – Deputy Director

Troy Huth is the Deputy Director for the MUSC Foundation for Research Development. Troy evaluates MUSC inventions for intellectual property and commercial potential, manages prosecution and maintenance of intellectual property (IP), markets technologies to prospective licensees, negotiates IP agreements, counsels faculty on startup companies, and aids in identifying potential collaborations and funding sources; all to assist students, faculty and researchers at MUSC in commercializing inventions.

Prior to joining FRD, Huth served as a licensing manager at the University of South Florida from 2015 through 2018 where he managed university IP; marketed technologies; negotiated licenses for a range of technologies including: pharmaceuticals, medical devices, nutraceuticals, and other life science technologies; and aided faculty and researchers in startup formation. Huth also previously served as a project attorney at Alston & Bird, LLP where he participated in intellectual property litigations and counseled clients on intellectual property issues.

Huth is a U.S. Registered Patent Attorney and is licensed to practice law in the State of North Carolina. He holds a J.D. from the Charlotte School of Law, and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of South Carolina. His research at USC was focused on computational biology and molecular genomics.

Casey Charboneau

Casey Charboneau, JD, MBA – Technology Transfer Attorney

Casey Charboneau is a Technology Transfer Attorney for the MUSC Foundation for Research Development. In this role, she evaluates MUSC inventions for intellectual property and commercial potential, drafts and negotiates intellectual property agreements, advises faculty on intellectual property protection and industry relationships, works with MUSC counsel on wide-ranging legal matters implicating the organization, and serves as compliance officer.

Prior to joining the FRD, Casey served as a legal extern in the Office of the General Counsel at MUSC where she supported counsel for the MUSC enterprise through legal research, writing, and analysis on legal topics relating to various aspects of university, research, and hospital operations. Charboneau also previously served as a legal extern for General Counsel of St. John Health System, a private health system in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Casey holds a J.D. from the University of Tulsa College of Law, an MBA from the University of Tulsa, and a BS in Bioengineering from Syracuse University.

Kaitlyn CrobarKaitlyn Crobar, JD – Technology Transfer Associate

Kaitlyn Crobar is the Technology Transfer Associate for the MUSC Foundation for Research Development. In this role, she evaluates MUSC inventions for intellectual property and commercial potential, manages intellectual property protection, markets technologies to prospective licensees, negotiates IP agreements, and counsel’s faculty in business development efforts, all to assist in commercializing MUSC clinical and research innovations.

Prior to joining FRD, Crobar graduated with her J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law where she completed the curricular program in Technology Commercialization Law Studies, was a senior research associate for the Innovation Law Center and was a student attorney in the Transactional Law Clinic. Crobar also holds a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.A. in Politics from Ithaca College.

Pamela Kaufman

Pamela Kaufman – Senior Intellectual Property Manager

Pamela Hood Kaufman is the senior intellectual property manager at the MUSC Foundation for Research Development. A native from Texas, she has called Charleston home since 2010. Kaufman has more than 30 years of paralegal experience supporting lawyers in varying law practices. The patenting process and all areas related to the support of technology has always been her primary professional focus. Kaufman's background includes managing Intellectual Property portfolios in a premier boutique law firm as well as a large multi-national corporation.

Following her emphasis in mathematics at the University of Houston, Kaufman obtained her paralegal certification from Southwestern Paralegal Institute in Houston - one of the first ABA approved paralegal certification programs in the U.S. She is currently a member of the Charleston Association of Legal Assistants.

Deanne Lucas

Deanne Lucas – Chief Financial Officer

Deanne Lucas, CPA is the CFO for the MUSC Foundation for Research Development. She is a Certified Public Accountant and has a bachelor's degree in business administration from the College of Charleston.

A native of Charleston, Lucas served as a longstanding CFO of a local independent school where she managed its financial, accounting and human resources functions. She was instrumental in managing the growth of the company's financial operations, including the school's first bond issue of $20 million.

Lucas was an ex-officio staff member of the school's board of trustees and several board committees.
