Guidance for Ebola affected Countries

Center for Global Health
November 20, 2014

Since March 2014, West African (Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia) countries experienced the largest outbreak of Ebola in history. Soon after the World Health Organization declared the end of the Ebola outbreak in these countries, new cases of Ebola were reported in Guinea late November 2015. The health systems in these West African countries continue to monitor for new cases and to exercise preemptive action to prevent transmission.

While the CDC has lifted the high level travel warnings to these countries, there remains an ongoing low level risk of exposure to Ebola in these areas, and sporadic cases may continue to occur. The CDC continues to monitor the situation and will update information for travelers as needed. Travelers who engage in activities that could expose them to Ebola (healthcare activities, etc.) are encouraged to:

1. Monitor the CDC website for updated travel advice and information. http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/diseases/ebola

2. Enroll in the US Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive important information from the embassy about health and safety conditions and allow the embassy to contact them in case of emergency.

3. At least 8 weeks before any international travel, students should schedule a visit at Student Health or a Travel Clinic to review your travel destination and receive any necessary vaccines or travel medications (anti-malarial medications, etc.). See CDC recommendations for immunization/travel recommendations for your destination.

*Travel restrictions also include Mali as of 11/18/2014
