J-1 Exchange Visitor Program

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program  is a diplomacy initiative administered by the United States government. The intent and purpose of the Exchange Visitor Program is to exchange persons and ideas and to build mutual understanding among peoples and cultures. The Exchange Visitor Program provides foreign nationals with opportunities to participate in educational and cultural programs in the United States and return home to share their experiences.

The Medical University of South Carolina is a designated sponsor of the Exchange Visitor Program. Exchange visitors are selected by a specific MUSC department to participate in a particular Exchange Visitor Program with specific goals and objectives.

J-1 is not an employment-based status. However, J-1 exchange visitors may be temporarily employed by MUSC as long as their primary activities are teaching, lecturing, observing, or conducting research.
