Membership Policies

 Age Requirement & Eligibility

  • Only individuals ages 18 and older are permitted to use the facility. 
  •  A valid government ID with a photo and birth date is required and staff reserve the right to request proof of identification.
  •  A waiver of liability must be signed by all members and guests.

Membership Payment

  • Effective October 1, 2022, the MUSC Wellness Center moved to a cashless payment system. Only electronic payments will be accepted for all memberships, guest passes, programs, services, and merchandise. The facility's payment terminals can accept many forms of payment including EMV chip, magstripe, and most contactless options (Tap to Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.). Electronic funds transfers for monthly membership fees (credit/debit and bank draft) will continue as normal.
  • Memberships are assigned to a specified individual and are non-transferable. 
  • Failure to use the facility will not relieve the obligation to pay membership dues.  
  • Membership fees will not be reimbursed or prorated due to planned closures (e.g., state holidays, construction, breaks, or events deemed necessary by MUSC) or emergency closures (i.e., hazardous weather, public health emergencies). 
  • Membership fees are either prepaid annually or paid monthly on the first of each month. Monthly memberships will continue after the initial 12 month contracted terms are fulfilled unless cancelled by the member. 
  • A $30 late fee will be assessed for monthly membership dues payments received after the 10th of the month and will also not be allowed access to the facility until the balance is rectified. Any returned checks or declined credit/debit card payments for membership dues will result in a $30 fee.  
  • The Wellness Center reserves the right to change membership dues and program fees.

Membership Cancellation

  • If a member intends to cancel their membership, they must submit an online request for cancellation form. For the request to be completed, the member’s account must be in good standing with no outstanding balance. 
  • If a member is in the first year of their contract, they are required to submit the appropriate documentation for one of the following reasons: (1) Moving beyond a 50-mile radius; (2) Death; (3) Military duty; (4) Medical disability that will not allow them to exercise 
  • Appropriate documentation for these reasons includes: (1) Written verification of move (e.g., lease/mortgage statement, utility bill, valid ID with new address, etc.); (2) Death certificate; (3) Military Orders; (4) Doctor's note 
  • If a member is still within their first year and cancelling for any other reason than what is listed in this section, they are obligated to fulfill their contract including the full payment of contracted terms. 
  • Cancellations must be made at least 30 days in advance and will take effect on the last day of each month.  
  • MUSC Wellness Center staff may suspend or terminate a Membership Agreement at any time for the following reasons: (1) Disorderly conduct; (2) Disruptive behavior; (3) Abuse of Wellness Center facility, equipment, or staff; (4) Failure to follow Wellness Center rules, policies or guidelines, or university regulations or policy 
  • Any user asked to leave by staff will not be refunded any paid charges.

Membership Hold (Freeze)

  • If a member wishes to put their membership on hold, the member must submit a request for hold form. For the request to be completed, the member’s account must be in good standing with no outstanding balance. 
  • Holds cannot be prorated and are limited to a minimum interval of 1 month. 
  • Members may hold their membership up to a total of 3 months per calendar year. 
  • Holds can only be taken in advance and cannot be retroactive. 
  • For members paying annual or semi-annually, the amount of time requested for a hold will be added to the end of the current membership timeframe. 
  • Membership holds do not include add-ons (i.e., locker rentals and parking cards).

Guest Policy

  • The guest pass applies to only anyone 18 or older. 
  • Day passes are valid for return visits on the same day of purchase. 
  • Guest passes are non-refundable and non-transferable. 
  • Guests may not participate in Intramural Sport programs. 
  • All guests must abide by facility policies and heed all staff directions.

Facility Rules

General

  • A valid membership or guest pass is required to gain access to all facility amenities and services.

  • Wellness Center members and guests must enter the facility though the main entrance located at the top of the red brick steps.  The lower lobby entrance is reserved for ADA access.
  • Proper check-in at the Membership Services desk is required prior to accessing the facility. 
  • Only individuals ages 18 and older are permitted to use the facility. 
  • Cell phone use should be limited and should not impede another member’s experience. 
  • Wellness Center staff are to be treated with respect; instructions provided by staff are to be followed. 
  • Per university policy, consumption or distribution of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or illegal substances is prohibited. 
  • Concealed weapons are not permitted anywhere inside of the facility.
  • Proper athletic, non-marking, rubber-soled shoes are to be always worn in applicable areas. 
  • Proper workout attire is required at all times (shirt, athletic shoes, athletic shorts, no jeans, zippers, or attire that can damage equipment). 
  • Hand-to-hand combat training/sparring where contact is being made to the head/chest/body of another person is not permitted, unless the training is pre-approved as through a proper facility reservation. 
  • Profanity, fighting, outbursts or disturbances will not be tolerated at any time. 
  • Hydrating beverages in sealable, shatter-proof containers are permitted; other food and drinks are only permitted in designated areas. 
  • Sports equipment (e.g. paddles, racquets, etc.) may be checked out at the Cardio Room Desk and must be returned after use.  
  • Lockers are available for personal items. For your safety, do not leave backpacks or personal belongings unattended. 
  • The MUSC Wellness Center is not responsible for personal belongings brought into the facility. 
  • Spitting is not permitted in any activity or common areas.

Cardio/Weight Room

  • Equipment must be used as intended by the manufacturer. Do not move or relocate equipment without Wellness Center staff approval. 
  • Users may not drop weights or dumbbells as this damages equipment, except for bumper plates. 
  • Headphones must be always worn while listening to portable music devices. 
  • All machines and equipment must be wiped down and weights returned after use. 
  • Users should always inspect equipment for loose, frayed, or worn parts before using. Report any injury or facility/equipment irregularities to the staff on duty. 
  • Spotters are recommended.  
  • No outside equipment is permitted without prior approval. 
  • Allow others to share equipment or "work-in" between use.

Group Exercise Studios (Main Studio, Crow's Nest, Cycle Studio)

  • Participants must clean and return any equipment, weights, or mats they use. 
  • Use of the facility stereo is prohibited except by authorized staff.  
  • Storage areas are off-limits during informal use. 
  • Dropping weights is prohibited. 
  • Class entry is on a first come, first serve basis. Each class is subject to maximum enrollment, which varies depending on class format and studio space, to provide a safe environment for all participants. 
  • Participants may enter an open class until 10 minutes after the start time.  
  • The MUSC Wellness Center reserves the right to adjust the group exercise schedule when necessary.

Boxing Studio

  • Appropriate boxing gloves must be always used when using boxing equipment. 
  • No equipment is to be removed from the boxing studio. 
  • Please return the equipment to its original place after use.  
  • Members must wipe down all equipment after use.

  • The Next Wave studio is designated for personal training and/or program use only, and informal use is prohibited.

Basketball Gym

  • Open recreation activities are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please check the multipurpose gymnasium reservations online or located on the gym door for any scheduled activities.  
  • Personal stereos must be approved prior to use. 
  • Keep the floor area clear. All personal belongings must be placed in a locker or under the benches located at each end of the gym. 
  • All equipment must be returned to their original storage at the end of use.  
  • Do not lean, pull, or sit on the divider curtain. 
  • Please do not bounce balls outside of the indoor or rooftop basketball court.  
  • Hanging on the basketball rims is not allowed. 
  • For everyone's enjoyment, please make every attempt to be respectful of others and allow for multiple activities to occur during free-play times.

Rooftop

  • Read and follow all posted rules and instructions.
  • Equipment (e.g., racquets, balls) can be checked out from the cardio desk. All equipment must be returned after use.  
  • Members have the option to reserve court space for the rooftop tennis and Pickleball courts through the member portal.  
  • Do not move Pickleball nets outside of the tennis courts and only use nets for intended purpose.  
  • Do not remove equipment from the functional training zone.  
  • For your safety, we will close the rooftop for unsafe weather conditions (e.g., heat index reaches 105°F or higher).

Squash/Racquetball

  • Non-marking athletic shoes and protective eyewear are required at all times in the squash and racquetball courts.

Locker Rooms

  • MUSC strictly prohibits inappropriate behavior.  
  • Please respect the privacy of others and maintain appropriate boundaries while using facilities.  
  • Towel coverage is required in the entire locker room including sauna and steam rooms. 
  • Electronic devices such as telephones, iPads, and electronic tablets are prohibited from use in the entire locker room.  
  • All showering and locker room activities must be completed before the facility closes.

Day Lockers

  • Lockers designated for day use only. Locks left on day use lockers overnight will be removed and belongings will be bagged, labeled, and placed in our lost and found area.  
  • You must provide your own lock for the day use lockers.  
  • The MUSC Wellness Center is not responsible for lost or stolen personal belongings brought into the facility.

Rental Lockers

  • Lockers are available for rent on a monthly or annual basis. 
  • For your safety, please lock all valuables in an assigned locker, check the lock security before leaving the locker room and do not give the combination of your locker to anyone.

Sauna/Steam Rooms

  • Food and drinks other than water are prohibited from entering the sauna and steam room.  
  • *Warning: Please exercise caution in the steam and sauna rooms as they can be hot and may cause burns if used inappropriately. 
  • Sauna:  
    • Water or other liquids are prohibited from being placed on sauna rocks. This can cause damage to the system. 
    • Paper towels or coverings are prohibited from being placed on the thermometer of the sauna.

Pool

 

  • The pool closes 15 minutes before the facility. 
  • Appropriate swim attire must be always worn while using the pool. 
  • Per DHEC regulation, all users should shower before entering the pool. 
  • All lanes are open for swimming. Swimmers are expected to share lanes with others when all lanes become full.  
  • Do not swim if you have an infectious or communicable disease. 
  • No lifeguards on duty; swim at your own risk.  
  • Diving is not permitted in any part of the pool.  
  • Glass containers, food and gum are prohibited in the pool area.  
  • Hanging on ropes or lane lines is prohibited.

Indoor/Outdoor Track

 

  • Directions for the track are changed on a weekly basis. 
  • All participants must follow the arrow direction for running/walking. 
  • Runners must be on the inside lanes and walkers must be on the outside lanes.

Stretch Room

 

  • No equipment is to be removed from the stretch room. 
  • Members must wipe down all equipment after use. If the wipes need to be replaced, please notify Wellness Center staff.

Parking

 

  • One hour parking spaces in front of the MUSC Wellness Center are available on a first come first service basis.  
  • A parking card and decal is required to park in the Wellness Center garage on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. All spaces in the garage have a two-hour time limit.

Personal Training/Group Exercise/Fee-Based Programs

 

  • Personal Training and Group Exercise must be provided by MUSC Wellness Center employees only. Outside personal training and group exercise instruction is strictly prohibited.  
  • All payments for facility use, programs, services, and classes are non-refundable and cannot be prorated. 
  • Training sessions cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled time will be redeemed and cannot be rescheduled unless the trainer and management provide an exception for unusual circumstances.  
  • Transferring unused personal training sessions to an immediate family member may be allowed at the discretion of the Wellness Center Director. 
  • Personal training sessions must be used 6 months from date of purchase.

Reservations Policies

  • MUSC departments, student organizations, and employees may request space reservation for official MUSC business. 
  • The MUSC Wellness Center’s activities have priority in spaces and reservations will be avoided during peak times to preserve informal recreation for students and community members.  
  • The MUSC Wellness Center is not liable for any charges incurred by the group reserving the facility, injury to participants or anyone hired for the event by the group reserving the facility.

Lost & Found

 

  • All lost and found items will be held for 30 days and then will be removed from the facility.  
  • To claim lost & found items visit the membership desk during open facility hours.
