MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center launches patient care technician apprenticeship program

LANCASTER, S.C. (Sept. 29, 2025)- MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center is proud to announce the launch of a new patient care technician (PCTs) apprenticeship program, developed in partnership with York Technical College and Apprenticeship Carolina. This innovative, hands-on program is designed to equip aspiring health care professionals with the skills and experience needed to assist providers in patient care.

Through this program, participants will also work toward earning their certified nursing assistant (CNA) certifications while gaining valuable real-world job experience. The program offers eight cohorts of students a paid apprenticeship, ensuring participants receive both classroom instruction and clinical training in a hospital setting.

Program highlights include:

  • On-the-job training – Participants will complete practical training at MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center.
  • Classroom instruction – Students will work toward their CNA certifications, with courses provided by York Technical College.
  • Paid apprenticeship – Participants will earn compensation during their eight-week training, creating a paid opportunity to learn and grow.
  • Career pathway – Graduates will be well-positioned for employment as PCTs, with opportunities for long-term career growth at MUSC Health.

To celebrate the launch, MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center will host a signing day at the hospital on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 10:30 a.m.. Featured speakers will include: 

J. Scott Broome, MHA, FACHE, CEO of MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center. Kathy Dickson, Ed.D., senior apprenticeship consultant at Apprenticeship Carolina. Stacey Moore, Ph.D., president of York Technical College.

“MUSC is focused on reshaping the future workforce. This program represents an important investment in our local workforce and their future,” said Broome. “By partnering with York Technical College and Apprenticeship Carolina, we are creating meaningful opportunities for individuals to enter health care while helping to address the staffing needs in our region.”

The signing ceremony will mark the official kickoff of this workforce development initiative, emphasizing the importance of community partnerships in training and retaining skilled health care professionals. Media representatives are invited to attend.
