LANCASTER, S.C. (March 24, 2025)-The MUSC Health Regional Health Network is proud to announce a significant milestone for its Graduate Medical Education (GME) program: The Internal Medicine Residency Program at MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center has achieved a 100% match rate in its inaugural year. This remarkable accomplishment underscores the program’s commitment to training the next generation of physicians and addressing the critical need for health care providers in rural and underserved communities across South Carolina.

“This achievement is a testament to the dedication and vision behind our residency program,” said Aravind Raghavan, M.D., Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center. “Our goal has always been to attract and train exceptional physicians who are passionate about making a difference in the communities they serve. Achieving a full match in our first year reflects the strength of our program faculty's commitment and the caliber of our incoming residents.”

After a competitive match process, eight outstanding physicians have been selected as the inaugural class of this Internal Medicine residency program. These residents bring exceptional academic achievements and a wealth of unique perspectives, collectively contributing to a robust foundation for the program’s future success. “Our ability to recruit top-tier residents in our first match cycle highlights the excellence and appeal of our training environment,” said Edward McCutcheon, M.D., MHA, FACEP, Chief Medical Officer at MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center. “By developing high-quality residency programs, we are building a pipeline of skilled physicians who will provide exceptional care and improve access to health care across South Carolina.”

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and offers residents a unique training experience in a community hospital setting. The program provides comprehensive clinical training through inpatient rotations, ambulatory care, research opportunities, and a rigorous didactic curriculum, all supported by the resources of a world-class academic health system.

“This program was designed with a clear mission – to train highly skilled physicians who are not only excellent clinicians but also dedicated to improving health care outcomes for patients and their communities,” said Tsveti Markova, M.D., MUSC Health Chief Academic Integration Officer. “Our residents will be well-equipped to serve the people of South Carolina, particularly in rural and underserved areas where the need is greatest.”

With the success of its first match cycle, the Internal Medicine Residency Program at MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of health care in the region.
