MUSC to build Hollings Cancer Network - Florence facility

New center will help elevate access to cancer care and cutting-edge clinical trials delivered in partnership with the Pee Dee Community

FLORENCE (February 3, 2025)– MUSC Health Florence Medical Center announces a new innovative addition to MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Carolina. The new MUSC Hollings Cancer Network – Florence facility will provide the region with expanded cancer services and access to state of the art clinical trials, supporting best local cancer care for the Pee Dee.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental (SCDHEC) reports an average of 780 people per year in Florence County are diagnosed with cancer with the top three types being breast, lung and prostate cancers.

The new facility will elevate and expand the level and access to current cancer services, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, gynecological oncology, surgical specialties such as breast, urology, and thoracic surgery, as well as expanded clinical trials. This addition will streamline care, improving patient experience and outcomes.

As part of the MUSC Hollings Cancer Network, the new facility will extend services of a National Cancer Institute (NCI) -designated cancer center and an academic medical center. The intent is to, in collaboration with Pee Dee health care providers, grant patients access to cutting-edge treatments, technology, and medical expertise and ensures patients receive the highest-quality care in South Carolina.

“The Hollings mission is to ease the burden of cancer for the state, and to do that, we need to make services more convenient in all regions of the state,” said Raymond N. DuBois, M.D., Ph.D. “This new facility will allow us to support the clinicians and patients in the Pee Dee region by providing them with easier access to a wider breadth of services.”

Beyond medical services, the facility will positively impact the community by offering preventative services and early cancer screenings. "By partnering with healthcare organizations across our region, we are strengthening our community’s access to world-class cancer care,” said MUSC Health Florence/Marion/Black River Medical Centers Chief Executive Officer Jay Hinesley. “Today, we celebrate not just a building, but a promise - to provide hope, healing and advanced treatment options right here in Pee Dee region.”
