Caroline Brown

Chief External Affairs Officer

Caroline Brown is the Chief External Affairs Officer for the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and MUSC Health. Brown's responsibilities encompass both the university and the health system functions at MUSC, working to establish new strategic partnerships and overseeing the organization's external affairs programs with key external stakeholders including corporations, universities, and economic engagement organizations.

MUSCs strategic partnerships with Siemens Healthineers and Medtronic - two of the world's largest medical device and solutions companies - were established and operationalized under Caroline's leadership. She also serves in an advisory role to the Office of the President as Special Assistant to President David Cole, M.D.

Caroline is an innovative, results-driven leader with expertise in strategy; communications; establishing partnerships, affiliations, and joint ventures; deal making; and stakeholder relations.

Brown, a Charleston native, earned her undergraduate degree in public relations and a master's degree in business administration from the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina

Senior Manager, Enterprise Partnerships

Christiana Gallagher is a Senior Manager in the Office of External Affairs where she works to identify, develop and manage major strategic partnerships, community engagement and economic development initiatives, and opportunities for innovation across MUSC.

Gallagher facilitates MUSC's value-based healthcare partnership with Medtronic and works with other key partners to advance MUSC's mission of "Changing What's Possible."

Prior to joining MUSC, Gallagher had a career in public service, including as a leader in the U.S. Senate and at the Department of Energy. In the private sector, she was Chief of Staff to an artificial intelligence technology company and led external affairs efforts at one of the country's largest utilities. Gallagher graduated from the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University with a degree in Science, Technology, and International Affairs.

Christina O'Malley

Senior Manager, MUSC Regional Health Network

Christina O'Malley is the External Affairs Lead for MUSC's Florence Division. In this role, she establishes partnerships with key external stakeholders in the PeeDee region of South Carolina to drive effective collaboration.

Prior to joining MUSC, Christina served as senior vice president at a health care foundation that supported a local health system. There she set strategic direction and provided daily operational leadership for the foundation. Prior to entering the healthcare field, Christina honed a diverse range of business skills through her leadership roles in pharmaceutical, software and marketing/communications companies, and state government. Throughout her career, she has shared her broad expertise as a volunteer and board member of numerous non-profits. Christina holds a B.A. in political science from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Portia Brown is the External Affairs Lead for MUSC’s Lancaster Division.

Portia Brown

External Affairs & Strategic Engagement Lead, MUSC Lancaster

Portia Brown is the External Affairs Lead for MUSC's Lancaster Division. In this role, she manages relationships with key external stakeholders in Lancaster and Chester to establish unique collaborations and partnerships.

Prior to joining MUSC, Portia served as a development officer at UNC Charlotte. There she cultivated and managed relationships with donors of the university. Prior to joining UNC Charlotte, Portia was director of annual giving at Winthrop University. Portia holds an undergraduate degree in business administration - marketing and an MBA from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC.

As the Relationship Manager, Clark Hankins serves as the key steward of the assigned partnerships across MUSC's tripartite mission. His primary responsibilities include managing a portfolio of our prospective, new, and existing enterprise collaborations with key external stakeholders to drive innovation and achieve MUSC's strategic goals.

Clark brings several years of diverse work experience including relationship management from his time working for the Governor of Florida and the energy industry as well as program management experience most recently in the Office of Clinical Research here at MUSC. Hankins, a former College of Charleston soccer player, earned his undergraduate degree in political science and a master's degree in public administration from the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University.
