More than 650 people attended the Medical University of South Carolina’s Bicentennial Gala at the Gaillard Center, an event that raised $100,000 for scholarships at MUSC.

Beth Heiter, senior director of Constituent Engagement at MUSC, said it was a fitting celebration for a banner year. “The generosity that came through gifts and sponsorships and all of those different things to help support our students at MUSC as a whole, it was just overwhelming to see all of that.”

MUSC, established in 1824 as the Medical College of South Carolina, held its first classes in Nov. of that year. Two hundred years later, MUSC educates more than 3,100 students in six colleges per year and trains almost 1,000 residents and fellows through its health system.

Other organizations pitched in as well. Linda Cox, interim vice president of the MUSC Foundation, said the gala was underwritten by generous sponsors so that ticket sales could go to be for scholarships. “The Bicentennial Scholarship is for all students from the six colleges at MUSC and managed by the Provost’s Office.  We would also thank Brackish for donating some of the proceeds from the sale of the Bicentennial items to this scholarship fund.”

Brackish, a Charleston-based company that sells handcrafted men’s and women’s accessories, created custom items to celebrate MUSC’s Bicentennial. Some bow ties from collection were worn at the gala.

Celebrate they did at the gala emceed by Carolyn Murray, a news anchor at WCBD. It included performances by Quiana Parler and Charlton Singleton of the Grammy Award-winning musical group Ranky Tanky.

Heiter summed it up this way: “It was just wonderful. It was just a really great night.”
