For MUSC Health’s Edward Gill M.D., surgery isn’t just a profession; it’s a passion. Edward has dedicated 35 years to serving Kershaw County along with his partner and best friend Paul Christenberry M.D., who he started out as just an intern with. Now, his son, Cameron Gill M.D., has joined his father’s team, forming a unique father-son duo at MUSC Health Surgical Associates Roberts St.

Edward knew he wanted to continue to work and raise his family in a small community like Kershaw County. He said surgery is more than just work for him, it’s a calling.

“I’ve always enjoyed medicine, the sciences and the aspect of helping people,” Edward said. “Surgery is what I think God created me to do because it allows you to help people.”

Growing up, Cameron never envisioned himself following in his father’s footsteps as a surgeon. “The only thing he would tell me is he knew he did not want to do what I did,” Edward stated with a chuckle. But as Cameron completed his senior year of college, his perspective shifted, and he wanted to return to the small town he called home.

“I saw how much my dad helped people and what a figure he was in the community. I wanted to do the same,” Cameron said.

Now, the two work side by side combining Edward’s decades of experience with Cameron’s fresh, innovative approach. Cameron has already made a significant impact at MUSC Health Kershaw Medical Center, introducing robotic-assisted surgery to enhance precision and patient outcomes. His efforts ensure that this medical center remains at the forefront of advanced patient care, alongside other MUSC facilities and leading hospitals state- and nationwide.

“I'm really excited about teaching my dad. He's going to perform his first robotics cases next month, followed by my other partner, Dr. Christenberry, who will complete his training and then start incorporating robotics into his practice. I think that's going to be big,” said Cameron.

Edward, who has primarily performed more traditional open and laparoscopic surgeries during his career, shares the same excitement with his son about robotic surgeries. He sees it as an opportunity to continue working and helping the community longer.

“I think it could potentially extend my career. I would hopefully work a few more years if God blessed me with good health,” said Edward, “I enjoy the work. And, it's not only my work; it’s my passion. So, I look forward to continuing that if I can.”

For Edward and Cameron Gill, the opportunity to work together, not just as colleagues, but as father and son is a rare and special opportunity that many can only dream of.

“I feel so blessed that I get to work with my good friend as I navigate work with my son,” said Edward. “So, I'm undoubtedly blessed.”

Cameron agreed. “It has been beyond my hopes. It has been just a wonderful place to practice and wonderful to come back and work with my dad.”
