Sharlene Wedin, Psy.D., has been appointed associate provost for Education Innovation and Student Life at the Medical University of South Carolina. Wedin, who has served in the role on an interim basis since July 2025, has been a member of the MUSC community for more than 20 years as a faculty member, clinician and leader.

The Division of Education Innovation and Student Life plays a central role in advancing MUSC’s academic mission by promoting student success, fostering well-being and supporting innovative approaches to teaching and learning. The division provides resources and guidance that empower students to excel academically and personally while collaborating with faculty to enhance educational experiences across all six colleges.

Wedin will report to the executive vice president for Academic Affairs and provost and serve as a member of the Provost’s Council.

“I am delighted that Dr. Wedin has accepted this role permanently,” said Suzanne Thomas, Ph.D., interim executive vice president for Academic Affairs and provost. “Her longstanding dedication to student well-being and her collaborative leadership will strengthen MUSC’s ability to provide the most innovative educational experiences and support our students’ success.”

A board-certified clinical psychologist and associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Wedin also holds a dual appointment in the College of Dental Medicine, where she teaches behavioral sciences. She chairs the Behavioral Support and Intervention Team, providing leadership across all MUSC colleges to promote student well-being and academic achievement. In her clinical role within the Division of Bio-Behavioral Medicine, she provides care for patients with complex medical and psychological conditions.

“I am honored to serve as associate provost and continue this important work,” Wedin said. “I am grateful for the remarkable foundation built by Drs. Gigi Smith and Darlene Shaw, whose leadership and dedication shaped the division in meaningful ways. Carrying forward their legacies is both a privilege and a responsibility, and I look forward to expanding opportunities for innovation and success for our students and faculty.”

Wedin earned her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University and completed her predoctoral internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, focusing on behavioral medicine and outpatient psychology. She also served as an army officer and faculty member at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, where she trained and mentored military health care professionals.
