Emergency & Public Safety

The Department of Public Safety at the Medical University of South Carolina is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for patients, students, visitors, faculty, and staff.

Our nationally accredited department maintains a highly trained staff of sworn police personnel appointed and commissioned as State Constables by the Governor of South Carolina. Officers are empowered to enforce the laws of South Carolina with statewide jurisdiction and arrest powers.

Personal Devices

In order to receive text, voice, or email alerts on your personal device, you must first register your personal contact information.

MUSC Email

All MUSC email accounts will receive prompt notifications of emergency situations.

Desktop Alert

Every MUSC networked desktop computer will receive a visual alert during an emergency.

MUSC Information Line

Call 843-792-MUSC during any emergency event for updates.

Lost & Found

Lost and found items from the entire campus should be turned in to the Public Safety Building. Anyone who has lost an item on the MUSC Campus may report it through the following options.

  • Visit the Public Safety Building at 101 Jonathan Lucas Street
  • Call 843-792-2261

Found property turned in to the Department of Public Safety can be reclaimed 24 hours a day. Identification must be provided when claiming lost property.

Safety Escort Program

The Medical University Department of Public Safety offers 24/7 personal safety escorts for students, employees, and visitors.

Service details:

  • Escorts are available within campus and surrounding areas (up to two blocks). Special requests beyond this area require approval.
  • Staffed by patrol officers using foot, bike, and vehicle patrols.
  • You must be able to get in and out of the vehicle on your own. Wheelchair transport is unavailable, but referrals for assistance can be provided.

To request an escort, call 843-792-2261 and provide:

  • Your name
  • Phone number
  • Current location
  • Destination
  • Physical description
  • Any baggage

Note: State law requires children under four to use a proper child restraint system; seats will be provided if needed.

Electronic Security

At the Medical University of SC, Charleston campus, there are over 900+ doors controlled by badge access and more than 750+ security cameras installed in and around University Buildings and roadways.

Badge access history reports can be run upon request.

Recorded videos are saved for up to 25 days and can be reviewed by Hospital Security and MUSC Public Safety Investigators.

Panic Buttons are installed upon request. Those installed on the Charleston campus are responded to by Public Safety Dispatch Services.

In addition to physical devices, MUSC Public Safety recommends all students and employees download and install the LiveSafe app on their cell phones. Information and instructions on how to install the LiveSafe app can be found at the following link:
