Dental Insurance

Two dental insurance plans are available for benefits-eligible employees through Blue Cross Blue Shield: Dental Plus or Basic Dental (formerly known as the State Dental Plan). To decide which is best for you, review the following:

  • Dental Plus pays more and has higher premiums and lower out-of-pocket costs. Basic Dental pays less and has lower premiums and higher out-of-pocket costs.
  • Dental Plus has higher allowed amounts, which are the maximum amounts allowed by the plan for a covered service. Network providers cannot charge you for the difference in their cost and the allowed amount. The maximum yearly benefit for a person covered by Dental Plus is $2,000.
  • Basic Dental has lower allowed amounts. There is no network for Basic Dental; therefore, providers can charge you for the difference in their cost and the allowed amount. The maximum yearly benefit for a person covered by Basic Dental is $1,000.
  • You can enroll in dental benefits during your initial enrollment, open enrollment in October of odd-numbered years or a special eligibility situation.
  • Dental Plan details can be found by visiting the PEBA website.
  • For convenient, on-campus appointments visit the MUSC Dental Faculty Practice website.
  • Dental Plus providers can be found by visiting the BCBS website

Vision Insurance

Vision care benefits are available through the State Vision Plan, a fully insured product provided through EyeMed Vision Care. Employees may receive a comprehensive eye exam once per year and standard plastic lenses for eyeglasses or contact lenses instead of eyeglass lenses, once a year.

Members with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are eligible for office service visits and diagnostic testing once every six months to monitor for signs of diabetic changes in the eye. The EyeMed Vision Plan Provider Network is a Select Network that includes private practitioners and optical retailers in South Carolina and nationwide. For convenient, on-campus appointments visit the MUSC Storm Eye Institute website. Visit the EyeMed website to view providers and the PEBA website for additional information.
