Rosa Marie Compton is a 3rd-year doctoral student in the College of Health Profession Division of Occupational Therapy. She will soon travel to Oaxaca, Mexico for an 8-week health program with Child Family Health International as part of her Occupational Therapy Doctorate capstone project. She is also a recipient of the MUSC Center for Global Health Student and Trainee Travel Grant.

We asked Rosa Marie about her upcoming program.

Describe your upcoming project.
I will participate in Child Family Health International’s global health program in Oaxaca, Mexico, and join local healthcare workers at community-level clinics and hospitals.

What do you hope to accomplish/learn during your project abroad?
The aims of this project are to understand the healing practices used in Mexico’s healthcare system, including traditional and complementary models, and to use knowledge of complementary and integrative approaches to consider how these models can successfully apply to Western rehabilitation.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed how you think of “global”?
Child Family Health International emphasizes how our social, political, environmental, and economic actions impact our role as a "global citizen." COVID has elevated my awareness of just how connected and intertwined our lives can be, even on an international scope.

Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself, or something you enjoy doing in your free time?
I was a part of an Indian dance team in college.
