MUSC Health to offer free 3D mammograms to people who are uninsured or underinsured

Mobile mammogram unit to be stationed at Lancer Center to increase community accessibility, reduce health disparities

Lancaster, S.C. (Sept. 23, 2024) – MUSC’s mobile mammogram unit will soon roll into the Lancer Center shopping center in Lancaster, S.C., where it will be stationed for two weeks to provide free screenings for uninsured or underinsured individuals.

The Siemens Healthineers’ 43-foot-long mobile mammogram unit will be available to patients from Monday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 11, in the Lancer Center parking lot. The unit will offer state-of- the-art imaging services at 1256 Lancaster Bypass West at the top of the Big Lots parking lot.

“These life-saving screenings play a critical role in early detection, and by making them accessible to our community, we can help to reduce the impact of breast cancer,” said J. Scott Broome, CEO of MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center. “It’s our mission to eliminate barriers to health care, and we are proud to provide this service to ensure everyone has access to the care they need.”

These screenings help to detect cancers at early stages when they’re most likely to be treated successfully. Barriers to cancer screening often include the lack of insurance or money for out-of- pocket expenses, lack of transportation to a health care provider or inability to take time off during work hours.

Details: This service is free to the uninsured and underinsured. It is open to individuals ages 40 and above with no current breast health concerns and a last mammogram over a year ago. Private changing rooms are available. Registration is encouraged (call 803-286-1284), but walk-ins are welcome.

Dates: Sept. 30 through Oct. 11

Hours:

  • Sept. 30 through Oct. 3: 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Oct. 4: 12 p.m.-6 p.m.
  • Oct. 5: 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • Oct. 7 through 10: 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
