The Medical University of South Carolina has once again been recognized by the Charleston City Paper in its annual “Best of Charleston" list. The list is created by popular community vote and reflects how local residents view a variety of categories of people, places, events and things in the Charleston area. Specifically, MUSC and MUSC Health were recognized as:

  • Best Hospital
  • Best Place to Work
  • Best Health Club
  • Best Weight Loss Center

Patrick Cawley, M.D., chief executive officer of the MUSC Medical Center and vice president for clinical operations at MUSC, said it requires collaboration and caring to make MUSC a well-regarded hospital and workplace. “It takes all of us to deliver the great care recognized by this award. I am even happier about the best place to work. Once again, this is about teamwork, excellence and the desire to change what's possible together."

Janis Newton, director of the MUSC Wellness Center, said seeing it named “Best Health Club” for a  third year in a row is amazing. “Everyone is having fun while improving health.”

Newton said the Wellness Center, at 45 Courtenay Drive, helps people reach goals they didn’t realize were possible. “Our nutrition services, health coaching, massage therapy, InBody Analyzer, pilates studio and personal training have been critical in helping our members focus on improving lifestyle habits. All of our new programs, services, and equipment have added training options for the members, including Urban Groove and Barre, yoga, pilates mat, group cycle, Zumba and Tae Bo.”

In another category, "Best Weight Loss Center," the MUSC Health Weight Management Center came out on top. The center, at 67 President Street, is directed by Patrick O’Neil, Ph.D. “I think it’s a real testimony to the very talented multi-disciplinary staff that we have at the MUSC Health Weight Management Center. They’re skilled, they’re up to date on the latest science, but what I hear from our patients that they value even more is the care and support they get from our staff who can combine knowledge and expertise with humanity and compassion."
