No child wants to be in the hospital for the holidays, but children who need to be in MUSC Children’s Hospital will at least have some special things to look forward to. Betsy McMillan directs the Child Life program, which focuses on children’s emotional well-being and development.

“By providing opportunities to play, receive gifts and enjoy special holiday events such as photos with Santa, holiday music and special craft activities, the Child Life team creates a festive, comforting environment for our patients and their families who must stay with us to receive medical care,” McMillan said.

The team gets some help from the community this time of year. “We’re very fortunate to receive countless phone calls and emails from people asking about donating toys to patients,” McMillan said.

“It’s overwhelming and astounding to see the outpouring of care and support. Individuals, families, schools and companies identify with the Children’s Hospital and show their holiday spirit with their generosity.”

That generosity has a real impact. “Toys, games and activity supplies can make a big difference to children and families spending time in the hospital,” McMillan said. “Any gifts that are not distributed are given to children throughout the remainder of the year on birthdays and other milestones. Donations also stock the shelves of our playrooms for hospitalized children to use year round.”

She said play is a way to help children cope with stressors such as illness and trauma. “The relationship that develops between the Child Life specialist and the patient allows the specialist to know the child’s interests and coping style,” McMillan said.

“Because of the donations we receive, we have a variety of materials, toys and activities to choose from, and we can create therapeutic play interventions and select gifts that match individual interests.”

People interested in making a holiday donation can do so through the Child Life page.
