Navigating the ever-changing research landscape can be challenging, especially for those starting out at a new institution. To address this challenge, the Medical University of South Carolina hosted a New Faculty Research Orientation on Aug. 14, which provided an invaluable introduction to the institution’s research enterprise.

Presented by the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) , in partnership with the Office of Research Development (ORD) and the South Carolina Clinical & Translational Research (SCTR) Institute, the event was designed to equip new faculty members with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in MUSC’s dynamic research environment. This brand-new event was met with enthusiasm and appreciation by attendees and presenters alike.

“It was great that the meeting was so well-attended,” said faculty panelist Kenneth Ruggiero, Ph.D., professor in the College of Nursing. “There are a lot of resources available to our research community, and it is important for early-stage investigators to learn early and often how to leverage them.”

During the orientation, new faculty members had the opportunity to engage with experienced researchers and administrators. They gained insights into the University’s research support offices, funding opportunities, compliance requirements and collaborative initiatives. “I was especially excited to witness how many people attended the research roundtables, where faculty could focus on specific areas most relevant to supporting their research endeavors,” stated Carla Stipe, director of the ORD. The program also featured interactive sessions with the research leadership and panel discussions that allowed attendees to interact with faculty of all different levels.

“The New Faculty Research Orientation is a testament to our commitment to fostering a supportive and collaborative research community at MUSC,” said Anand Mehta, Ph.D., interim vice president for Research. “By giving our new faculty the tools, knowledge and resources needed from the outset, we are investing in their success and, ultimately, in the advancement of science and health care.”

New faculty attendees expressed their gratitude for the comprehensive overview provided by the orientation, noting that it helped them to feel more confident and prepared to navigate the complexities of the research landscape at MUSC. A sampling of their comments include:

  • “This orientation was full of great information! A wonderful use of my time.”
  • “Really appreciate the whole thing. There is a great deal of support here, but it is a challenge navigating where to turn. This has made it clearer.”
  • "I have a greater appreciation for the services offered throughout the process.”

The event underscored MUSC’s dedication to supporting its researchers at every stage of their careers, ensuring that they have the tools and support needed to make significant contributions to their fields.

Looking ahead, the OVPR hopes to make this orientation an annual event, with an open invitation extended to current faculty as well. “By welcoming both new and existing faculty members, this event will not only serve as the foundational experience for newcomers but also offer a valuable refresher on the resources and opportunities available to all researchers at MUSC,” said Mehta.
