October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

In 1989, Congress passed Public Law 101-112 designating October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. MUSC seeks to support survivors, remember victims, and raise awareness about intimate partner violence (IPV) throughout the year, but also specifically in October with events and educational programs.

To learn about resources available to victims and survivors of IPV, as well as resources for those working with those impacted by IPV, please visit the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence website or the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault website. • Purple Pinwheel Display

  We honor the lives of those lost to domestic violence in South Carolina during the past year by displaying purple pinwheels. 

• Intimate Partner Violence Press Conference

• Town Hall: Empowering Community
  October 5, 2023, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  Keith Summey Library, North Charleston
  Join My Sister's House in a meaningful, guided town hall forum with Lowcountry domestic violence victim service partners, focused on discussing opportunities for engagement and building stronger pathways to survival. The event is free, but an RSVP is requested.

• 5 to Survive: 5K Run & Memorial Mile Walk
  October 14, 2023, 9:30 a.m.
  Wannamaker Park
  Join My Sister’s House’s annual 5K Run/walk and Memorial Mile Walk to show support for victims and survivors of intimate partner violence. This is a family-friendly event. Register and learn more here.

• Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Display
  October 18, 2023
  MUSC Horseshoe
  A display will be located in the Horseshoe to honor the lives lost in South Carolina to intimate partner violence during the past year. Members of the MUSC Advocacy Program and Forensic Nursing team will be available to answer questions.

• Non-Fatal Strangulation: What Survivors Want You To Know
  October 24, 2023, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
  In person and virtual
  Seminar with law enforcement educator Brian Bennett. Continuing Education (CE) credits are available for law enforcement (1.5 hours) and social workers (2 hours).
