Presidential Update November 2

Dear MUSC family,

I encourage each of you, if you are an American citizen and have not already done so, to exercise one of your most fundamental rights and vote tomorrow. Of course, if you do plan to vote in person, please participate in all COVID-19 precautions to protect yourself and others at the polls. My hope is that we as Americans, regardless of outcomes, are able to realize a safe, positive and united path forward.

Our nation, state and community will likely be faced with unique unknowns associated with the election and the ongoing pandemic. When moving through uncharted territory, or when all other known methods of navigation were insufficient, sailors have relied on the stars to point the direction home. I believe that we, too, align with our constellation when we stay focused on who we are, relying on each other and MUSC’s common core values of respect, compassion, collaboration, integrity and innovation. Furthermore, our statewide and local communities, neighbors, friends and families count on us, both as an organization and as individuals, to provide direction. I know that MUSC will remain the trusted lighthouse that continues to help our communities, state and country navigate these uncharted waters, just as it has over the past many months.

Finally, as colder weather approaches and the holidays arrive, the temptation to give into COVID-19 fatigue will be a huge challenge. If we want to avoid becoming overwhelmed by another surge in infections and hospitalizations, we must all continue to promote and adhere to all of the precautions that help to keep rates low and the vulnerable among us protected. And, remember to encourage your friends and loved ones to do the same.

As we enter this season of giving thanks, I appreciate your taking the time to read this today, and I am especially grateful for all that you do to make MUSC and our communities better.

Yours in service,

David J. Cole, M.D., FACS
MUSC president
