About Us

The goal of the MUSC Sustainability & Recycling Program is to reduce the environmental impact of our campus by advancing energy efficiency and water conservation, and encouraging recycling. Last year, MUSC recycled 27 percent of total solid waste. Guiding departments and units to reduce waste and helping them to conserve resources is our mission, while we continue to increase the proportion of waste that is recycled.

MUSC Sustainability and Recycling was honored to receive the 2016 Annual Recycling Award from the Carolina Recycling Association (CRA) for its Lab Recycling Program.

The award from CRA “honors top performers that advance waste reduction and recycling in the Carolinas.” MUSC’s lab recycling program provides labs with recycling bins and in-person training on how to safely and effectively recycle lab-related plastic, glass, and metal that would otherwise be destined for the landfill. As a result of these efforts, MUSC has seen a 27.5 percent increase in the tonnage of plastic, glass, and metal recycling and has saved $17,000 annually in hauling and landfill fees. There are an estimated 700 labs on campus and MUSC is actively trying to expand recycling to more of them.
